Mammography

Mammography is an important tool for the detection of breast pathology. A mammogram examination involves compression of the breast tissue for each of the images taken. This compression is required to obtain a clear picture of the structures within the breast and is crucial as the structures which are evaluated are very small. A trained technician will guide your positioning during the examination.

Images are acquired of breast tissue with the use of x-rays. During breast compression x-rays travel through the breast and are received on a digital or computerised plate behind the breast. An image is generated from this process. Dose to the breast tissue will be kept to a minimum for each mammogram performed.

Mammograms are currently the most effective method for detecting small breast tumours before a lump can be felt. Therefore, the procedure can be used for both screening and diagnosis. Screening is basically a ‘check-up’ on the tissue of the breast, or your doctor may have requested an x-ray to assist in the diagnosis of breast problems.

However, it is still important to do breast self-examination and have regular checks by your doctor.
